EMDR will get you past your past so you can get on with your future!
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (E M D R) explained.
EMDR therapy is not limited to simply taking symptoms away. It addresses the past, present and future. Our brain is made up of nuro-networks; many of these networks are directed by the hippocampus. When you are exposed to traumatic events, unpleasant situations, bullied, embarrassed, or witness violence, a car accident the hippocampus shrinks. It has been shown through rigours research, using brain scanning equipment that several sessions of EMDR causes the hippocampus to return to near normal. The research also showed that when repeating the brain scans seven years later the hippocampus stayed that way. Your memories are still there but the charge these memories produces, such as anxiety, depression, sadness, fight or flight when you encounter those triggers are gone or greatly reduced.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has been declared an effective form of trauma treatment by a wide range of organizations. In the United States these include the American Psychiatric Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the Departments of Defence and Veterans Affairs.
Many of these disturbing life experiences take place throughout childhood and can include hurtful experiences with parents or peers. The negative impact on the person’s sense of self takes place since, just as with diagnosed PTSD, “unprocessed memories” are running the show.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful psychotherapy approach that has helped over an estimated two million people of all ages RELIEVES many types of psychological distress.
When a person becomes very upset, the brain cannot process information as it did originally. These moments become “frozen in time:
EMDR can be thought of as a “Neurologically Based Therapy” that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way. EMDR usually requires 8 sessions to complete the treatment. A typical session lasts from 50 to 90 minutes.
